UBU THE KING

Slovenian National Theatre, Ljubljana

About performance

The production is a team work by the Ubu ensemble based on Ubu The King by Alfred Jarry.

“If the main motif of Ubu the King is power simplicity, then it is portrayed in the production as an example of everyday life. Then a question – position arises directly and justifiably of why should theatre use political correctness, solidarity, normativity and ethics, if the same is not promoted by government, health care and schooling system. (Dnevnik)

Black comedy with variations on the Ubu themes, ranging from the innocent longing for success, to be the first and best, through fascination by winners and major figures, all the way to infantilism and banality of evil, position of power and rule. /www.delo.si./

The piece by Yerney Lorenci portrays his own vision of contemporary brutality and primitivism that is no smaller and less current than it was as Ubu the King was premièred. An attack om petty bourgeoisie, scandal that split the audience, unexpectedly foretold the events of the twentieth and, clearly, the twenty-first century, both in art and social life. In the arts, it foresaw the avant-garde of surrealism, Dadaism, as well as absurd drama. Within the society, it envisioned bottomlessness and ruthlessness. The ruthless, acquisitive, and indeed cowardly Papa Ubu. He was led by his wife to cruelly take over power and rule even more cruelly. Mama Ubulya is a parody on Lady Macbeth.

Ubu the King is a direct example of upside-down logic of making. As a character, he is difficult, but when on stage, vis-à-vis the people, audiences recognise the principles of his being that is acquiring Fascist nature. It becomes apparent in the gloomy power struggle with a significant portion of unreserved black humour without. Hence each era has its own Ubu the King.

Yerney Shugman is a laureate of many best actor awards for the character of Ubu. The team of authors has received awards for best production, which has toured a number of festivals.
