OTHELLO

National Theatre of Iceland and Vesturport

About performance

In a new explosive adaptation from the theatrical factory of Vesturport and the National Theatre of Iceland, Othello bursts onto the stage in a new exhilarating production where the forces of gender-inequality and the destruction of our planet set the premises for a new take on the classic play.

Iago, an ambitious career woman, is overlooked by Othello, when he selectsa younger, inexperienced man, Cassio, as his next in command. Deeply humiliated, her own jealousy drives her to seek revenge and destroy Othello and all that goes with it.

Running time: 2 hours with interval

Othello, who on the surface looks just like everyone else in this plastic-isolated society, comes under fire when he marries Desdemona, the daughter of Brabantio. This gives an excellent opportunity for Iago to spin her web of lies and turn the innocent feelings of Love into the dark forces of Hate.

Brabantio, Desdemona’s father will reveal how Othello is in fact not what he seems, but a foreigner amongst them, despite being of same colour and linguistics. This establishes further insecurity into the mind of Othello, making him seriously doubt the feelings Desdemona truly has for him.

The production draws inspiration from the gender-inequality that is very much in practice in all layers of society. Yet, with jealousy as its main theme it brings forward the dark human forces in all its retribution as it slowly penetrates and takes over the minds of our main players regardless of gender.

The production is set in a World where the fear of any potential “outside-threat” hangs over the human race. To protect themselves, they destroy all nature surrounding them and barricade themselves in a World of Plastic. This isolation becomes the perfect soil for evil to spin its way into the mind of Iago.

A Vesturport and National Theatre of Iceland production.
