LOTTERY TICKETS

The I.L. Caragiale National Theatre of Bucharest

About performance

“A modern illustration on how we imagine today a well-written play, how a play can be provocative and different; a play about hazard, luck and misfortune; about fate. It is provocative, heady, as well as fascinating. The bloody oblivion in carnival hell is equally sinister and mocking. In Lottery Tickets drama mixes with horror and black humour.” (Dilema Veche)

Lefter Popescu, an ordinary clerk who is being crushed by his own being, has struck lucky. Though he won the jackpot worth Leu 50,000 in two lotteries, he cannot find the tickets. In the hopelessness, Popescu’s is being searched. Lefter recalls that he surely had it in the pocket of his grey jacket. Yet it was the very jacket his kind wife had given as a gift to a Gypsy woman in exchange for dishes. Lefter, naturally, breaks the dishes and sets off to look for the Gypsy. And his jacket. Two patrol officers find her, moreover with the jacket. Alas, without the tickets. Even police interrogation fails to help to find the lottery tickets. The situation went as far as Lefter failing to turn up at work for a few days pretending to be sick, only to be able to find the tickets. As his search is about to each a climax, he runs into his own boss. His worries are topped up by the summons to the ministry, else he would get fired.

I is because of the summons that he manages to find in the secret file the two most crucial tickets in his life. He eventually decides to leave his job. He names the reasons as liberation from domination. He can at last collect his much-suffered and longed for victory. Once he arrives to collect it, he discovers, that each is in a different lottery. How can a poor soul bear so many shocks? Wont the sequence of events affect our ordinary petty clerk? What about his good wife? The classical burlesque is about to end with laughter. Yet what is it worth if it is against the background of diabolical wry grin?
